The data architecture conversation is dominated by Data Mesh (“decentralize ownership!”) and Lakehouse (“centralize storage!”). They’re often presented as opposing camps. They’re not.
Lakehouse is technical
Lakehouse is a technical pattern: a single storage layer (cloud object store) supporting both data lake (raw) and data warehouse (structured) workloads. It’s an evolution of the data platform.
Data Mesh is organizational
Data Mesh is an operating-model pattern: domain teams own their data products end-to-end. It’s an evolution of who owns what.
The pragmatic combination
Lakehouse storage + Data Mesh ownership. Technical pattern handles the storage + processing layer. Operating-model pattern handles the human + accountability layer. Most successful deployments combine both — even if neither vendor sells it that way.
