Data-mesh and data-product thinking has been the conference circuit for 4 years. Most CDOs still don’t know how to operationalize it. Here’s the framework.
A data product is owned by a domain, not by central data
The hardest reframe. Data products are built + owned by the business domain that produces the data. Central data team enables but doesn’t own.
A data product has a contract
Schema. Quality bar. SLA. Versioning policy. Consumers depend on it; producer commits to it. Without contract, it’s just a dataset.
A data product has consumers — measured
If no one consumes a data product, it doesn’t earn its keep. Data product portfolios should be reviewed on consumption metrics, the same way digital products are reviewed on usage.
The 90-day operationalization pattern
Pick 3 high-value domains. Help them stand up first-class data products with contracts. Wire them into a discovery layer. Measure consumption. Iterate.
